| 0:00.0 | So today, let's start with a question. |
| 0:03.0 | The history of animation is one that is full of interesting inventions and unique processes. |
| 0:09.0 | Popular culture, though, tends to imagine animation as largely the effort of artists. |
| 0:14.0 | But animation could not exist without the efforts of engineers and inventors. |
| 0:19.0 | So here's today's question. |
| 0:22.6 | Back during the first boom of 3D in the 1950s, |
| 0:25.6 | the Disney studio created 3D animation, |
| 0:28.6 | that is, animation that was designed to be viewed through polarized, |
| 0:32.6 | or what was then called, Polaroid glasses, |
| 0:35.6 | to create a believable 3D effect. |
| 0:38.3 | Live action productions during this time used side-by-side cameras mounted on a unique rig system, |
| 0:45.3 | one camera taking in the image related to the left eye, the other taking in the image related to the right, |
| 0:51.3 | to create full 3D scenes. But the Disney 3D efforts in animation used only one camera. |

| 1:09.4 | between to create some natural depth between the layers. |
| 1:12.8 | It was just a standard table camera setup with all of the art pressed flat beneath a piece of glass. |
| 1:19.8 | Let's add in one more thing. |
| 1:22.2 | These cartoons were in color, as color was part of the signature presentation of Disney animation, but Disney only |
| 1:29.8 | used black and white film. Some of you likely know how this last bit was accomplished, but here's |
| 1:36.4 | the overall question. How did Disney create color 3D cartoons using only flat images stacked |
| 1:43.8 | close together with one camera and with |
