One evening in the summer of 1998, homicide detective Danny Payne sat in a dark room inside of a

Tennessee suburb police station. He was focused on a TV screen where some surveillance footage was playing.

Now, the recording was bad quality and blurry and pixelated, but even still, it was clear

what the camera was pointing at. It was a McDonald's, and the time of the footage was clearly

at night. On the screen, Payne could see the shape of a person moving towards the restaurant

door, and then this person disappeared inside.

Now, the video was too low quality to make out any identifying details of this person, but the person really wasn't what Payne was watching.

Instead, he was focused on a car, parked at the far end of the McDonald's parking lot.

Payne had seen this video at least 30 times, but he'd never actually

noticed this car before. And now that he saw it, he realized nothing in this case was what he thought
