Summary

Inspiring readings for spiritual seekers growing older, wiser, and fiercer

• Presents years of weekly inspiration and practices pointing the way forward through every conceivable mood, opportunity, and stumbling block on the spiritual journey through the second half of life

• Includes quotes and stories by and about mystics, sages, and old souls from ancient through contemporary times who have walked this path before us

• Shares insightful guidance on transforming loneliness to solitude, loss of identity to freedom, anger to self-protection, fear to faith, and envy to love

Many of us navigating the years beyond midlife report high levels of self-acceptance, freedom, and joy, but there can also be bouts of second-guessing and regret as well as the occasional longing to be reminded that you’re not in this alone.

Designed to be read weekly in two-year cycles, the 120 timeless readings in this book focus on the issues and concerns that arise among those who view aging as a path to spiritual culmination. Transforming loneliness to solitude, loss of identity to freedom, anger to self-protection, fear to faith, and envy to love, Orsborn’s wise and compassionate insights are seasoned by quotes and stories by and about mystics, sages, and old souls from ancient through contemporary times who illuminate the path to living a full life while embracing old age. The connecting thread is the reminder that you have what it takes to shift from reacting with fear to the challenges of aging, instead accepting these challenges in a spirit of gratitude as they help you grow not just old, but whole.

Carol Orsborn, Ph.D., is founder of the Spiritual Aging Study and Support group and author of more than 35 books, including The Spirituality of Age, with Robert Weber, Ph.D., and Older, Wiser, Fiercer. She has taught at Georgetown University and lives in Nashville and Toronto.

Now here's your host, Cliff Dunning.

Hey, how are you? How you doing? Come on in and have a seat. Welcome to Destiny. This

0:25.8

week we're talking about spiritual aging or aging and understanding the process of getting older.

0:33.2

And aging isn't something we do well in the United States and in most Western cultures because we are

0:39.5

a marketing complex. We're all about buying the new house, the new car, the new jewelry, the new

0:48.3

vacation, clothing, whatever, and staying above the Joneses. We are into purchasing things, and when you eventually retire, you have to be careful

0:59.5

what you spend.

1:01.3

So we don't want to retire.

1:02.8

We don't want to not work until we can't work anymore.

1:07.4

But that's a problem.

1:09.0

And older cultures, ancient cultures, China, India, parts of Mexico and South America, when

1:15.7

you get to a certain age, it's time to pull back and not work every single day and perhaps

1:23.4

retire to do something else.

1:26.6

Now, I'm of the belief that when you stop the corporate life,

1:31.2

it doesn't mean you retire, you shift, you morph into something else. And I've always

1:37.9

been productive, always been a creative person. And I kind of take a take after my grandfather. He was a doctor, a physician of

1:47.5

medicine. And he actually retired when he was 80. And even after he officially hung up his shield,

1:57.2

he was still seeing patients. He was making rounds at hospitals and visiting with people and recommending.

2:04.7

So he became what you can consider an elder.

2:09.0

And I see this a lot in older people in their 70s, 80s, late 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and

2:16.7

beyond, they are the wise ones.
