This is the 10th anniversary of Design Matters, and to mark the anniversary were

we playing some favorite shows from the archive.

This one, an interview with Louise Fely,

was recorded in November of 2012.

On this program, Debbie Milman talks with Louise Feeling about designing book covers and designing for restaurants

about why she prefers working for small businesses and about the importance of

sketching. When I get excited about a design it's's in the sketch stage, it's like,

ah, this is it. Now I really have something. That's usually the one that will work.

Here's Debbie Milma.

Louise Bailey is a master typographer, a lover of food and an extremely Italian, Italian American. When you step into her studio, you see it all.

There's an amazing collection of Italian tins,

stacked beside an equally gorgeous collection of Louise's own designs.

There are stacks of jams and wines and crackers.

There are boxes upon boxes of restaurant matchbooks and there's a wall covered with

books from Louise's time at Pantheon during which she designed over 2,000 book jackets. It was through that job that Louise met her

husband, the design historian, author, and educator Stephen Heller. He sent her a fan letter, they met, they married. Now, 30 years and many

collaborations later, Stephen has written the forward to Louise's new book, a monograph on the design and

typography of Louise Fili. It is called Elegentissima and the title could easily apply to Louise herself.
