There's a lot going on, so let's get rolling in Baltimore, where Derek Henry is attempting to become just the fourth running back in the past decade to rush for a thousand yards in the NFL at age 30 or older. He'll join retired running backs Adrian Peterson and Frank Gore and current Dolphins running back Rahim Morris in that club if he can pull it off. Henry realizes his age is going to be a topic of conversation. He's just not interested in having that conversation. I just focused on me being healthy, he said Monday, doing my job when I'm here and then letting my play speak for my age. The Ravens, who led the NFL in rushing attempts last season with 541, plan to do the same. They signed Henry to a two-year, $16 million deal in free agency. Henry's coming off a season in which he recorded 68.6 rushing yards per game and 4.2 yards per carry, both of which were his lowest averages since 2018. That was in Tennessee. Baltimore, Henry, the 2020 NFL offensive player of the year, will line up in the same backfield as quarterback Lamar Jackson, a two-time NFL MVP, and it'll run behind a Ravens offensive line that ranks seventh as a run-blocking unit on football guy Matt Batante's 2023 offensive line rankings. The immediate benefit? Henry's average first contact for the Titans last season was a half-yard less than the average first contact for Ravens running backs. So the situation's improved, but what about Henry himself as he moves into his 30? |
| 1:47.1 | Well, in addition to running for more yards than any other back in the league since he entered it in 2016, |
| 1:51.8 | Henry has led the NFL in rushing yards per game with 94 per outing since 2018 when he first became the Titans full-time starter. |
| 1:58.2 | And with all that comes to the biggest concern. |
| 2:00.5 | Henry has the most rushing attempts in the NFL since 2018-time starter. And with all that comes to the biggest concern. Henry has the |
| 2:01.0 | most rushing attempts in the NFL since 2018 with 1744. The counterpoint to that is Henry has shown |
| 2:07.2 | no signs of wearing down. The stats in advanced metrics showed that. Last season, Henry finished |
| 2:12.0 | second of the league with 1167 rushing yards and tied for seventh with 12 rushing touchdowns. He had the second most rushing |
| 2:18.4 | yards after contact in the league with 930, only trailing San Francisco's Christian McCaffrey, |
| 2:23.4 | and Henry can still move. When he hit 21.68 miles per hour on a run of the Titans regular |
| 2:28.9 | season finale last season, it was the seventh fastest speed in the NFL per next-gen stats. |
| 2:35.7 | It wasn't an isolated event. |
| 2:40.4 | Henry's breakaway run percentage ranked six best among running backs with at least 50 attempts. |
| 2:44.8 | I often cite an old cliche that maintains there are two things you can't coach at the NFL level. |
| 2:52.2 | Size and speed. Henry is six foot three and 247 pounds. Did I mention? He posted the 7th fastest speed in the NFL last season. |
| 2:57.3 | So yes, Henry turned 30 in January. Yes, he has the most rushing attempt since 2018. Also, yes, |
| 3:04.4 | still very big, still very fast. Optimism for the veteran is growing and he's moved to running back 8 and current average draft position. |
| 3:07.5 | He's running back 12 on the football guy's 2024 concessant's draft rankings. While you can expect to spend second round draft capital to land him, a running |
| 3:12.2 | back one finish is on the likely end of the range of possible outcomes here. In other news, |
