we'll be releasing some of our favourite talks from We Have Ways Fest Drei, our festival

from the start of September. This chat at War Fest Drei was a lot of fun and it was

called Afflicted, why we are obsessed with the Second World War, which James and I

chatted with Dermot O'Leary and James May about why the Second World War has them in its grip.

Well, James, you've already bought some bottles, haven't you? No. Yes, yes I have. I've bought

a Tamiya 148 scale Heinkl Salamander, which I can talk about but I wouldn't advise it. Oh,

go on then. I mean, if there's one place in the world, you'll say space, James. Well,

okay, let's keep it brief. It's a people's fighter developed very late in the Second World War to

exploit new jet-enging technology, which some people would argue was a German invention. They

certainly made it fly first and despite being a jet aircraft, it was largely made of wood because

they'd run out of aluminium, which was our fault because we won and that's why we're here.

There you go. That's a very good summary. I think I've got fault it. Pretty sick.

Yes, but back to your question about the affliction. I hope I can say this because as you've already

said, we are in a room full of similarly afflicted people, so we're amongst friends and I don't have

experience of the other situation in which this happens, but I know how it goes. So I'll start and

say, my name is James Mann, and I'm obsessed with World War II.

Yeah, I mean, I would say I have largely, I mean, the model airfick stuff was as a kid, my dad would

come home, and I'd save up and we'd buy a mattress and a Lancaster and then we'd put it together in

a way. So you're playing's not tanks? Yeah, pretty much. We'd put it together in a way that James

would find, James would find a parent, largely just glue all over it, kind of like, you know,

...
