then over hundreds of miles of Antarctic ice, followed by 800 miles across some of the

Derek was broader than his warders too.

He was a physically imposing 19-year-old, with a look of a weightlifter or a boxer.

The prisoner's shock of yellow hair, worn long and combed back, as was the teen fashion in

1953, danced in the cold winter breeze. Occasionally, smoke from a cigarette would blow back

into Derek's eyes, making him wince. But despite his bulk, a visitor to the jail, looking down at the scene and carefully

sizing Bentley up, saw something childlike in the convict. In his grey prison clothes,

he looked like a schoolboy dressed with some classroom charade. The prison doctors agreed.

Since his arrest the previous November,

they'd subjected Derek to a battery of tests.
