Summary

This was a big week in the ongoing discussion about the regulation and control of large social media platforms that regularly de-platform their customers that they disagree with. All kinds of kerfuffle related to Spotify, Patreon, and GoFundMe has ensued, and a lot of stuff has happened as a result.

FYI, I completely misspoke and called the crowdfunding site givesendgo.com GiveSendMe, for some reason. My apologies!

Welcome to another T-Rex talk. Today we're going to be talking about de-platforming and platforms.

0:08.4

Last night I was talking to some political folks about some legislation that is pending here in the state of Tennessee,

0:14.3

which would redefine certain online social media platforms as common carriers. And this is a

0:20.2

kind of an ongoing debate for the last

0:22.6

many, many years talking about are these, these online social media platforms publishers,

0:29.0

or are they platforms? What kind of government regulations should be imposed on them so that they

0:38.7

Amendment or free speech. How exactly do we interact with these particular platforms on the free

0:45.5

market? And this is a very, it's a very complicated conversation. But there are some very

0:50.8

interesting examples just from this past week.

So today I want to talk a little about GoFundMe, want to talk a little bit about Spotify,

1:05.9

want to talk about Patreon, want to talk about a few things that have happened just in the last week that are really kind of interesting things that have developed in this particular category. GoFundMe is in the news

1:13.0

because the Freedom Convoy up in Canada is in the news. There was a GoFundMe page for the Freedom

1:19.1

Convoy, which is truckers, approximately 38,000 Canadian truckers who were protesting a new law

1:26.4

that it would prevent any Canadian or U.S.

1:29.0

truck drivers from crossing the U.S. Canadian border without being vaccinated.

1:34.4

And so the Freedom Convoy raised tremendous support from both countries.

1:39.1

And they had a page on GoFundMe, and that raised 10 million Canadian dollars relatively quickly

1:48.1

from 120,000 donors, which means that's an average of 83 bucks per donor.

1:54.9

So these were not gigantic, vast, right-wing monies.

1:58.5

These were small-town people who were contributing to this right here.

2:03.1

Now, as the Freedom Convoy worked its way across Canada, it was heavily criticized by the
