Summary

Dennard Dayle has written a laugh out loud satire about the Civil War.  It’s both risky and ambitious and he pulls it off beautifully in How to Dodge a Cannonball.  It’s a novel about Anders, a man totally unequipped to handle the horrors of the Civil War, in which he switches sides three times.  How to Dodge a Cannonball is moving, the language is both intense and incredible, and it will make you giggle at things you never thought possible.  Considered one of America’s great “moral” wars, this Civil War book pokes fun at everything from racism to royalty. Take your time and get lost in Dennard’s satiric world.  We are so glad we did.  Find books mentioned on The Book Case: https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/shop/story/book-case-podcast-reading-list-118433302 Books mentioned on this week's episode:   How to Dodge a Cannonball by Dennard Dayle Everything Abridged by Dennard Dayle Catch-22 by Joseph Heller The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain Moby Dick by Herman Melville Learn more about your ad choices. Hello, happy mid-July. It's Thursday, which means it is time for the bookcase. And I am the

Kate of the Kate and Charlie Part, and my co-host is... Charlie Gibson. I'm the back half of the

bookcase with Kate and Charlie. Kate, we've been talking the last couple of weeks about how this is the official podcast of the National Hockey League.

Should we continue with this nonsense?

0:59.9

Or should we move on?

1:01.5

You know, again, I'm really, we're lucky we haven't been sued.

1:05.4

But I'd just like to go back for a minute and say that I love picturing you as the back half of the bookcase.

1:10.3

I picture us in like one of those Halloween costumes where I'm the front of the horse and you're the back of the horse or the back half of the horse. You've seen those celebrations for the Chinese New Year when there's a dragon and somebody has to be the back half. Someone has to be the dragon's butt and you are the dragon's butt. And if you can, you know, if you're good at waggling that, that back half, I suppose you could be in that position.

But I don't think we've had more conversation about a book in the three years that we've been doing this,

as we have about how to dodge a cannonball by Dinar Dale. We discussed discussed is this going to be a really good book for the podcast, and do we think it's going to be popular with the public? We really have gone back and forth about this. Give us a prissy of our conversations, Kate. Well, actually, I'm going to throw you under the bus. Here's me. Hsu, throwing you under the bus.

Well, you'd love to do that. You'd love to do that. I was 20 pages into this book, and I was completely

hooked. And so I've been sort of championing it. And I'm going to say this to our audience.

2:12.4

This is not a book you can read in 36 hours. It is a hardcore satire, and it's got some real tragedy and trauma

intermixed with very funny parts. The plot is important in the sense that you generally know

what's going on, but the plot in some ways is a fever dream. This book focuses on a character
