If you are like me, you likely despise the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma for profiting

from the opioid crisis that led to nearly a million deaths. Pharma It's easy to have ill feelings toward those who handsomely profited, benefited from those

deaths, making fortunes off the pain and suffering of others.

But what if the Sacklers, Purdue Pharma, or even Big Pharma more generally, is not as much

to blame as something else, a deep rot in society, which one expert finds in towns where there was de-industrialization,

a lot of despair, long family histories of addiction to things like alcohol.

What if the main culprit, the villains, if you will, were

not the sacklers, but the greatest, the greater evil is the environment and circumstances

that created those deprivations and the urge to dull that emotional pain with well anything.

And what is it about our misunderstanding of opioids as they are simplistically grouped together with opiates that leads to poor policy decisions

which do nothing to address the root of all this pain and suffering and the public's

willingness to do anything to make it stop.
