Summary

California's 2026 governor race is in chaos as Democrats split their vote across multiple candidates while Republicans surge in early polling. Recent surveys show GOP candidates like Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco leading the field, raising the possibility of a major upset in a state long dominated by Democrats. Efforts to push Eric Swalwell out of contention are falling short, adding to the party's internal struggles.

One of the biggest stories in politics right now is the fall of Eric Swalwell.

0:06.0

A member of the House, he's now resigned and the frontrunner to win the California

0:11.2

governor's race on the side of the Democrats.

0:13.9

He's gone.

0:15.2

A major scandal erupts with multiple women accusing him of seriously messed up things,

0:19.9

including drugging them and then

0:22.5

forcing himself upon them.

1:01.9

sitting at the top, first and second place. Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco. Eric Swalwell was

1:08.3

rivaling Bianco and Democrats had been begging someone to drop out of the

1:14.1

governor's race so that their voters would split among all of the other Democrat candidates

1:19.2

boosting their numbers and hopefully launching someone into second place. Thus, the race in

1:25.5

November would be a Republican and a Democrat, and the Democrat

1:29.2

would likely win. So here's the working theory. Eric Swalwell was a darling in the Democratic

1:35.8

Party. He was ascendant. A member of the House frequently on TV, probably was going to be

1:42.1

governor if the Republicans were out of the way, but they were not.
