Summary

Just how worried should we be about the future of American democracy? This is the question at the center of a two-part series from Vox Conversations and host Zack Beauchamp. For part two, Zack talks with political scientist Lee Drutman, author of Breaking the Two-Party Doom Loop. They discuss the history of the two-party system in American politics, and examine a number of possible structural reforms that could work to get the U.S. out of the morass it's in, looking to several other countries' democracies for inspiration. And, if you missed it, check out part one in this series, a lively debate between Zack and the New York Times's Ross Douthat, on just how close we are to political violence, authoritarianism, and democratic breakdown. Host: Zack Beauchamp (@zackbeauchamp), Senior Correspondent, Vox Guest: Lee Drutman (@leedrutman), senior fellow, New America References: "How does this end?" by Zack Beauchamp (Vox; Jan. 3) Breaking the Two-Party Doom Loop: The Case for Multiparty Democracy in America (Oxford; 2020) "Democracy in America? The Sun's certainty about what's in store for the future of US democracy is the question at the heart of our Vox Conversations 2 Part Special.

Recently, I published a feature called How Does This End on the Long-Term Prognosis of America's Political System that kicked up quite a bit of conversation.

1:52.0

In the piece, I argued that the American democratic system was breaking down, creating greater risks for violence, and a slide out of democracy altogether.

2:02.0

And the worst part is that all the best ideas for fixing things seem unlikely to happen at best.

2:08.0

So, the future for democracy is not looking bright in the United States.

2:15.0

In this two-part special, I wanted to spotlight two voices in the discussion who have unique and interesting thoughts on the key issues at stake.

This week, part two in the special, I'm talking to Lee Drummond, a senior fellow in the Political Reform program at the New America Think Deck.

2:34.0

In his book Breaking the Two-Party Doom Loop, Lee argues, surprise surprise, that the two-party system is at the heart of America's current democratic crisis.

2:42.0

So to fix things, he argues for completely restructuring the way America's congressional elections work.

2:48.0

The idea is that if you change the elections, maybe we can enable the rise of a multi-party system.

2:53.0

Now, I cited Lee's proposal in my feature as an example of the sort of reform we should be thinking about if we want to preserve American democracy.
