Summary

"Demetrios Contos" by Jack London tells of London's days dealing with the oyster pirates and fish poachers while working with the Fish Patrol in the waters off San Francisco and Oakland. Demetrios Contos was a Greek fisherman who relied on his catch to make his living. The Fish Patrol was his enemy, but there was a code among them all that demanded fairness, and despite differences in race and nationality, or which side of the law they fell on, they respected one another as men. 0:35.8	Demetrius Kontos, is a story from London's younger days working for the Fish Patrol.
0:41.3	His duty being to catch and round up illegal poachers who worked to the oyster and salmon rich waters of the San Francisco Bay and surrounding for illegal profits.
0:52.0	As a teen, Jack London had worked on both sides of the law,
0:56.0	making the wise career choice to move to the enforcement side and using his
1:00.7	knowledge to snare lawbreakers while earning a steady paycheck.
1:04.3	In his book The Oyster Pirates, London Short Stories tell of an international
1:09.3	community of watermen, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese, and Greek who lived by the Code of Fairness and
1:16.6	respect the transcended race and nationality.
1:21.1	This is one of those stories.
1:23.0	And now, Demetrius Kontos by Jack London.
1:27.0	It must not be thought from what I have told of the Greek fishermen that they were all together bad
1:36.8	Far from it, but they were rough men gathered together in isolated communities and fighting with the elements for a livelihood.
1:45.0	They lived far away from the law and its workings, did not understand it,
1:50.0	and thought it tyranny, especially did the fish laws seem tyrannical.
1:55.0	And because of this, they looked upon the men of the fish patrol
1:59.0	as their natural enemies.
2:02.0	We menaced their lives or their living which is the same thing in many
2:07.9	ways. We confiscated illegal traps and nets the materials of which it cost them considerable sums,
2:15.0	and the making of which required weeks of labor.
2:18.0	We prevented them from catching fish at many times and seasons, which was equivalent to preventing
2:25.2	them from making as good a living as they might have made had we not been in existence.
