Summary

"Demetrios Contos" by Jack London tells of London's days dealing with the oyster pirates and fish poachers while working with the Fish Patrol in the waters off San Francisco and Oakland. Demetrios Contos was a Greek fisherman who relied on his catch to make his living. The Fish Patrol was his enemy, but there was a code among them all that demanded fairness, and despite differences in race and nationality, or which side of the law they fell on, they respected one another as men. 1:45.0

They lived far away from the law and its workings, did not understand it,

and thought it tyranny, especially did the fish laws seem tyrannical.

And because of this, they looked upon the men of the fish patrol

We menaced their lives or their living which is the same thing in many
