Demetri Martin just put out his first new stand-up hour in six years. But when he sits down for this interview with The Last Laugh podcast, he’s about to tape the second of what will be a trilogy of specials for Netflix. It’s quite a comeback moment for the (shockingly) 50-year-old comedian, who has remained mostly out of the spotlight in recent years as provocative, autobiographical stand-up comedy has overtaken the one-liner “joke machine” style that he has been honing for more than half of his life. In this episode, Martin breaks down the meta-concept behind his new ‘Demetri Deconstructed’ special, reveals why he started bringing drawings on stage, shares his take on some of the more concerning comedy trends and a lot more.
Plus, Matt and Allegra take on the state of ‘Saturday Night Live’ and why this past weekend’s Ryan Gosling-hosted episode was the show at its very best.

0:00.0 | This is The Last Laugh. I'm Matt Wilstein from The Daily Beast. |
0:08.6 | In a little bit, we are going to have my interview with Dimitri Martin about his new Netflix special, Dmitri Deconstructed. |
0:16.0 | But first, the time has come for us to get into all things SNL. So I have Allegra here with me to talk |
0:23.4 | about it. And I'm so excited because I think we are both obsessed with SNL to possibly a weird |
0:30.1 | degree. Am I right? I definitely check out the live from New York subreddit every day. So I think that |
0:36.7 | counts. I think you might be more |
0:38.3 | obsessed than me then. I don't know. Now, yeah, that's a lot. I feel like I want to start with a quick |
0:44.7 | anecdote about my Saturday night this past weekend, which I was sitting in my living room watching |
0:51.3 | SNL, which I'm very thankful comes on at 8.30 p.m. on the West Coast now. |
0:56.5 | And my wife walked into the room and was like, are you watching this for work or for fun? |
1:01.8 | And she was pretty, she's generally horrified that I want to watch SNL every single weekend, |
1:08.0 | even when I'm not like specifically watching it for work, although I knew |
1:11.6 | we were going to be talking about it. So I was watching it, but I have to admit that I would |
1:15.1 | have been watching it anyway. And I know you're kind of the same, right? Yeah. I mean, I don't |
1:19.8 | really cover it for us, even though I always say if you need me to, I can. But then I'm also like, |
1:25.4 | oh, I'm out actually. So I can't. But yes, I would say I |
1:30.7 | watch it every week, either live or I'll just the next day watch like clips, but I try to always |
1:36.1 | watch it. Yeah, I feel like most people are watching clips the next day. So watching it live is like |
1:40.6 | an extra level of dedication. But yeah, I mean, you said you didn't cover it, |
1:44.9 | but you did write something about SNL this week because there was a sketch that you just |
1:49.8 | couldn't ignore, I think. So we're talking about this Ryan Gosling hosted episode, which is the |
1:54.8 | most recent one that aired, which I think, you know, is fair to say and is pretty widely agreed |
