1820, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a whale rammed to the American ship Essex,

forcing the crew to abandon ship and set off in a small paddle boat.

Amazingly, five of those sailors managed to keep themselves alive after nearly three months

of drift and they were rescued. Hard to imagine anyone being saved from a worse predicament,

and yet if you're a Christian, you've already experienced a far greater deliverance.

is in a desperate situation, and that desperation is made manifest by its inability

to distinguish who is a true Christian. We have abandoned any clear understanding of what it means

to really be saved. We, in the sense of broad evangelicalism, this kind of evangelicalism

pervades today, and it's being systematically developed and spread. And people are reluctant to call
