Summary

Do you really live by your core values - or do you even need help defining what they are? Many of us might have a vague notion of what is important to us in life, but our daily decisions and actions don’t always align with those values. The more precision with which we define our values, the more resilience we have to thrive in tough times, and lead through anxiety. Suzy Welch is the author of a number of books including most recently Becoming You: The Proven Method for Crafting Your Authentic Life and Career. And she explains how she approaches values, why they are different than virtues, and how better understanding what really matters to you can guide a more focused and productive work life.  Suzy’s book: https://www.amazon.com/Becoming-You-Proven-Crafting-Authentic/dp/0063418606Suzy’s podcast: https://www.suzywelch.com/podcasts/

Are you really, really, living life according to your values?

I'm Maura Erin's Mealy, and this is the Anxious Achiever,

0:12.0

the show that looks at the intersection of mental health, leadership and work,

0:17.0

and asks, how can we do it all better?

0:33.1

We all have a basic idea of what we value in life.

0:39.8

But sometimes what we think are our values are really virtues, right?

0:46.2

Like being a good person and following the golden rule and having a strong moral compass.

0:51.3

Values are a little quirkier, our guests will share with us.

There's one that I particularly enjoy called beholderism,

1:02.7

which means that I value a life in which things are presented beautifully, in which my environment is harmonious, and therefore I put a lot of attention into how I look and how the spaces I live

1:09.2

in, look and feel. That is not one of my values, but being an

1:13.5

achiever is one of my values, as is eudamonia. I bet most often we say we have these big, lofty

1:23.2

ideals, right? But if we look at our day-to-day lives, they may not quite align with what we say

1:28.6

our values are or where we think we want to even start to begin to define them. There are all

1:34.4

kinds of tests out there to help you better understand what kind of leader or what kind of person you are.

1:39.8

Today's guest is someone who studies values as a lens for people and leaders to do better and align with who they are, to focus on what matters most to them and better understand their behavior.

1:52.0

I'm a big fan of Susie Welch. She's a professor at NYU Stern, and her latest book is called Becoming You, the proven method for crafting your authentic life and career.

2:03.0

Susie is also relaunching her podcast of the same name, and I sat down with her to learn more about

2:07.9

her values framework, which I really like, what it means if what we say and what we do aren't

2:13.2

aligned, and how self-awareness can improve our lives and our leadership. But I started by asking if she

2:21.4

considers herself an introvert or an extrovert. I'm so far off the scale on extroversion that

2:30.7

you can't even measure it to tell you the truth. I mean, it's just, I've only met one person
