Historians and the media love certain words. They like words such as legacy and doctrine.

They want to know what is this president's legacy?

What was that president's foreign policy doctrine?

And we remember some of them, peace through strength.

We remember speak softly and carry a big stick.

We've seen world leaders embrace appeasement, which did not work out very well.

We remember the lessons from Thucydides and the Mewian dialogue.

We know some presidents thought they could negotiate with anyone and talk their way into or out of anything.

And of late, we saw a president who announced he would be okay with a small incursion or invasion,

but maybe not a large one. And his acquiescence has led to about a half a decade-long war in Eastern Europe.

And with President Trump, the foreign policy doctrine is often referred to as America First.

But what does that mean?

What are the details?

What does it look like in practice? I mean, the phrase itself is probably irresistible.

President Barack Obama used to say with respect to taxes, everyone should pay his or her fair share. Well, of course they should. We just don't agree on what the

word fair means. We don't agree what their fair share is. For some, apparently, fair was zero.

For others, fairness was closing in on 40%. I don't know who put him as the arbiter of fairness, but with President Trump,

the phrase America First is also nearly unassailable. Of course, we should put our national interests

at the forefront. I mean, whose interests would we have as paramount to our own? And since it is his doctrine, and he coined the phrase,

one might think he should get the first crack at defining what it means.

But then that's when human nature kicks in.
