Today, the Doctrine of the Trinity, Part 2.

We've just introduced the subject of the Trinity, and last time I indicated that although the word

Trinity is not found in the scriptures, that's really incidental.

The point is that the doctrine of the Trinity is a systematic summary of the biblical data that indicate

two things, that there is one God and that there are three distinct persons in the Godhead.

And if those facts are true, then the doctrine of the Trinity is true.

So let's look at the scriptural data today that support these two truths.

First, that there is one God.

Both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament, we find that this doctrine is taught.

Monotheism. There is but one God.

Deuteronomy, chapter 6 and verse 4.

Turn to Deuteronomy chapter 6 and verse 4.

Here, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord.

This is the fundamental confession of Judaism, the so-called Shema.

And the first clause of that confession is the uniqueness

of God. There is one Lord. First Kings, chapter 8 and verse 60. First Kings, chapter

eight and verse 60. This is Solomon's benediction on the occasion of the

dedication of the temple, and he prays in verse 60 of chapter 8 that all the peoples of the earth

may know that the Lord is God, there is no other.

So there is no other God than the Lord, the God of Israel.
