Over the last week or so, plenty has come out about new transfer guard Devante Jones,

and understandably so.

He was officially welcomed into the program and the university over the last week,

and he spoke to the media a few days back.

And yes, you're going to hear from him one-on-one here on the podcast.

Really excited to share that conversation.

He's a well-spoken young man with a really interesting journey to get to this point.

So with all of that said, there have been plenty of takeaways about Devante's decision to

take himself out of the NBA draft and fulfill on that decision to come to Michigan and be a

graduate transfer. There are also plenty of thoughts out there on how Devante could fit on this roster,

and the fit on paper

is really good. But my biggest takeaway and reflection on all of this a little bit more broad.

There are a number of ways to recruit and woo talent in college basketball, whether it's a

sophomore in high school or a fifth year college player or somewhere in between. And we've heard

from head coach Juan Howard before about his recruiting.

He here in questioning a lot the word philosophy thrown around when it comes to this topic,

but Coach Howard, as he's talked about, it's just keeping it honest, keeping it real with these players.

You'll hear in Devante's conversation with me that he indicated some schools didn't want him to go through the NBA draft process, even though Devante felt it was what was best for him.

Yet, Michigan welcomed that, encouraged that.

Also, we all know that Coach Howard and his staff, well, they do not get into playing time promises while they are going through

recruiting. They discuss fit and opportunity and style and culture, but no promises are given in terms

of, yes, you have this set role, you will get these set minutes. That's not always the case.
