There has been plenty of discussion around the incredibly quick turnaround from cutting down the

nets in Indianapolis to the portal opening for Michigan men's basketball.

The gap was around 40 minutes, and yes, there really were Michigan staff members looking at

the portal while donning their freshly minted national championship hats in the victorious

locker room Tuesday morning at Lucas Oil Stadium.

We can debate if that's the right way to approach things.

In my opinion, it's not.

No debate really needed.

But everyone on the staff certainly did deserve more time to soak everything in, obviously.

Hopefully, some of the reporting around that turnaround helps to change things.

I did think it was probably even worse when

the portal opened the Monday after the first weekend of the NCAA tournament in 2025.

Terry Mills and I were around the building that day when Michigan staff was, yet again,

living a two-season existence, preparing for its toughest opponent all year, top-seated Auburn in the

Sweet 16 down in Atlanta, and starting the official process of building what would turn out

to be a national championship roster for 2025, 2026. And a quick aside, any coach in America,

any staff at America would make that trade or just the trade of

preparing for a Sweet 16 when the portal is open. It is a first world problem, even if it is a problem.

Still, it's not as if the staff just started thinking about this on that Monday in late March

in 2025 or this year on Tuesday, April 7th.

In fact, the staff-wide discussions started shortly after the new year for this roster

that had five new announcements last week.
