Juan Howard is more than 100 games into his head coaching career here at the University of Michigan,

and I can't remember a time where he was as critical of his team's performance in our postgame

conversation as he was following the Lost Thursday at Iowa.

It's not a critique, just an observation.

Coaches do it differently.

Traditionally, Coach Howard has been someone who has kept it very positive in public

in post-game press conferences and interviews and all of that.

And make no mistake, when he's behind closed doors with his players,

yeah, there's going to be some tough coaching.

That's how this works at the college level.

And what was it surrounded?

What was his frustration all about?

Well, one word from Thursday night, that was defense.

Against Iowa, you have to be buttoned up defensively.

And even then, Iowa was still going to score some points.

The thing about the Hawkeyes is you could almost always rally against them because

their defense is traditionally suspect, but give an inch on your side defensively, and they can take

a mile offensively. And that was the case down the stretch in this one on Thursday. It was a game

that felt like it belonged to Michigan for almost the entire

regulation session. Michigan led for almost 34 of those 40 minutes. Iowa's largest lead before
