David Livingston is a man who pioneered mission to Africa.

And when he made the commitment to go, many of his close friends were trying to persuade him not to go.

They were saying to him, this is dangerous.

You don't know what's going to meet you on the other side.

Nobody has ever gone to Africa to preach the gospel. Fearing the danger and the loneliness more than anything else,

he almost was tempted to accede to their desire, but he didn't.

Strengthened by the power of God, he went along.

And in the first day on his mission journey, he opened the scripture to Matthew 2820,

and he began to read those words,

Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

A few years later he came back to England and he was speaking to a large crowd.

And he shared, he said, although the danger was real, although the loneliness at times

was so crushing.

And yet those words of Jesus in Matthew 2820 were my

greatest companion. Loneliness has been described as the most desolate word in the English language.

Loneliness is not a specter of age.

Loneliness is no respecter of race.

Loneliness is not a specter of social status.
