I've been canoeing the boundary water since I was 12 years old.

0:26.2

My father took me the first time, a five-day trip out of Ely, Minnesota, into Moose Lake,

0:32.6

and then north through a chain of portages, into the Quedico Provincial Park on the Canadian side.

0:38.2

I remember almost nothing about that trip except the sound the loons made at night,

0:42.8

and the feeling of being somewhere that had no roads, no buildings, no electricity,

0:48.3

no evidence that the modern world existed at all.

1:34.7

analyst for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. The Boundary Waters is where I go to be myself,

1:41.3

completely and without complication. And I've never once felt unsafe in all

1:45.7

those years and all those trips. Until May of 2003, I need to put this down in writing because

1:51.9

it's been 11 months, and I still can't sleep through the night without waking up and checking

1:56.1

the locks on my doors, and I live in an apartment on the third floor in Duluth.

2:01.7

There are no locks to check that would matter.

2:04.4

But I check them anyway, and then I stand at my window and look down at the parking lot

2:08.7

and the street lights, and I wait for my heart rate to come back down before I go back
