That first drew me to the baby's room that night. A glowing,

shimmering, aluminum, clam-shaped thing was parked outside the window. It had reached into the

room with long metallic arms that had lifted the child up, turning it slowly as the creatures transformed it. They weren't much bigger than ants,

and glowed in the darkness of the room, making luminescent trails between the sleeping child

and their mothership. And I could see it was already too late. I could see the spidery glimmer of

aluminum framework, the glint of chrome motors and gears and the electronic tangle of wires

and work lights winking inside the child's body. During the night,

they had transformed my sleeping sun into a complex machine,

a space station

hidden under human form.
