Welcome to the Autism, ADHD podcast. I am so happy that you join me today. I want to take a moment and ask for your help. Please take just a second and give the podcast a five-star review.

0:19.5

This will help me continue the podcast and keep bringing you

0:23.3

helpful information. Thanks so much again for taking the time to give that five-star review. Now,

0:29.9

let's get started. Hi, everyone. Thanks for joining me. Today, I'm covering a big topic in the world of education and

0:40.8

behavior. Parents and professionals will often say, Holly, what's an FBA anyway? I'm going to break

0:49.1

it down for you in this episode. Understanding what a functional behavior assessment is is a big deal because it gives us

1:01.0

the information that leads us to a behavior support plan. So it's got to be good. First, I'm going to

1:08.7

dive into some reasons why a good FBA is important for a struggling student.

1:16.0

First, it's going to give us some understanding about why this behavior is happening in the first place.

1:22.4

It gives us a backstage pass to understanding the reason, the why, behind the behavior.

1:30.3

It's not about stopping the behavior necessarily. It's about getting to the root of it because

1:36.3

something is wrong. If a student is engaging and challenging behavior, we need to figure

1:43.3

out what's happening for them so we can support

1:45.8

them. Because believe me, they are doing the best that they can. They're doing the best they can

1:53.6

considering the environment they're in, the way their body feels, what's being asked, or how it's

1:58.6

being asked. There's just so many things to consider. Another reason

2:03.0

why an FDA is important is to create individualized support. So think of an FBA as a way of crafting

2:12.8

a personalized game plan for them. By figuring out the triggers, the variables around it, the reasons for

2:20.3

the behavior, you can support that individual student's needs. It's like creating a roadmap for

2:27.1

support that fits that unique child, not the child sitting next to them in class. This is not a one FBA fits all students.

2:37.6

It's not.

2:38.4

And if it's approached that way, believe me when I say, we're going to get it wrong.
