| 0:11.0 | including all kinds of physical and sexual violence. The essential text we are discussing is |
| 0:17.0 | the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women, given at the United Nations in 1993. |
| 0:23.9 | And we're including it in this history-based project on systemic patriarchy, |
| 0:28.2 | because throughout history, violence against women and particularly domestic abuse |
| 0:33.7 | was seen as a private matter, sometimes and in some places even endorsed by the state. |
| 0:40.0 | But even when it wasn't promoted by the state, patriarchal institutions have condoned or disregarded |
| 0:46.1 | violence against women, looking the other way and failing to protect victims and survivors, |
| 0:51.9 | and instead protecting the perpetrators of that violence. |
| 0:55.6 | Even the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women or CEDA in 1979, |
| 1:03.9 | and listeners should look that up if you haven't heard of it. |
| 1:06.6 | It's an incredibly important milestone in the protection of just women against discrimination, |
| 1:12.8 | but even CDA neglected to address violence against women. |
| 1:17.7 | So in 1993, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted this new resolution, the |
| 1:24.0 | Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women. |
| 1:30.8 | And we'll be sharing passages from this declaration today. |
| 1:39.6 | It's an incredibly important text, and in addition, we'll be sharing important, difficult stories that require a lot of strength. |
