Let me ask you this, do you think you are in the spotlight?

Well, according to you and your perspective, you do.

The spotlight effect is the phenomenon in which people tend to believe that they are

being noticed more than they really are.

Given that one is constantly in the center of one's own world, in other words, if you

look around yourself, it kind of looks like the whole world is rotating around you.

That you are, in fact, the center of the universe, and everything and everyone is looking

at you.

In one test, some students wore a bright, embarrassing, yellow, berry-manalo t-shirt to

a large, introductory, psychology class.

They then had them estimate how many people in the class they thought had noticed them

and their god-awful shirt.

They greatly overestimated.

They grossly overestimated how much attention had been paid to them.

Nearly most everyone else didn't even notice them at all, or their terrible shirt.

So what explains the spotlight effect?

Basically, it is the result of egocentrism.

We all are at the center of our own universes.
