It is Thursday, December 7th.

So I'm here in the green room at Politico's holiday party,

where a group of us sort of cordoned ourselves off in a bunker and watched

the Republican presidential debate, streamed it on a kind of spotty Wi-Fi. One of those in the

room with me was our very own Adam Wren, national politics reporter. Adam, how's it going?

Zach, Zach, it's so good to be with you, but I must say that

this is the least festive holiday party I've ever been at on account of the debate that we saw

tonight. What are your top line takeaways? I mean, Zach, nothing changed tonight in the overall calculus or trajectory of the race.

I think that we saw Haley maybe not have her best debate.

I think everybody agrees that Ron DeSantis had maybe his best debate.

But like nothing happened tonight that that arrests the that arrests the the momentum that she already

has she she didn't lose no she didn't lose and really if you if you step back even beyond that

uh chris christie was really the only person tonight who took the view that donald trump as a candidate mattered and attacked him and tried

to like contrast with him. So I just don't see how any of the candidates really, really won. I think

Trump has been proved right so far in his decision not to be involved in these debates at all.

So let's go through each of the four candidates who were on stage.

Obviously, you mentioned Donald Trump, who is not on stage and is the gorilla in the room

or whatever metaphor you want to use.
