Summary

Travellers are getting really stressed about reaching their Christmas destinations.

I would advise to please start as early as you can — and if you were thinking of driving on Friday or Saturday, avoid the middle of the day. Bear in mind that trains are going to be very busy on Friday and shutting down very early on Christmas Eve, but I'm very much hoping everyone will get where they need to be.

On the shortest day of the year, midwinter's day 21st of December,

0:13.2

and the good news is, and I'm genuinely excited about it, from now onwards,

0:18.4

the days start getting longer.

And you can imagine all the glorious things that are going to be happening in six months' time on mid-summer's day.

0:30.4

Looking back, six months, that was when we had the very first national rail strike of the 21st century. Yes, hadn't seen them really

0:50.2

national strikes, from the Drivers Union, Asleff, five days of national strikes.

0:56.4

Once or twice, those have overlapped.

0:58.6

We also had the three non-strike days, which actually, because they were called off so late in the day,

1:06.2

effectively were the same as strike, certainly adding a couple of strike days to that total.

1:13.3

And we seem no closer to getting any resolution.

1:19.5

There's reports that the RMT union has had last ditch talks with Network Rail,

1:26.7

but the strike, I think think for this coming weekend starting on

1:31.9

christmas eve on saturday at 6 p m carrying on till tuesday morning at 6 a m we'll go ahead and

1:40.3

looking across at the border force strike as well, that's going to cause some problems.

1:45.2

But I'm not absolutely convinced that airports are going to be shut down.

1:49.7

I very much hope that I'm being realistic rather than optimistic about that.

1:55.6

But let's just walk through where we are.

1:59.8

Rail is absolutely the big problem at the moment because my view,

2:05.5

which is that we should all get where we need to be by Friday tea time is unfortunately slightly

2:12.1

unraveling due to the large number of cancellations on Avanti West Coast, where they've got huge resourcing issues,
