December is all about the drive towards one huge, sparkly, food-filled thing.

Christmas is not just the highlight of the month, it is the high point of the year,

and I do think it is kind of wonderful that this drive to celebrate the very deepest point of

winter is still with us. Huge celebrations around midwinter almost certainly predate Christianity

itself, because human beings sometimes have quite good ideas,

actually, and filling the darkest days of the year with sparkly lights, fires and food is

among our best. All of the preparation and celebrating can make this quite a tough month emotionally,

because there is an expectation that we will celebrate in a certain way.

And if that can't be met, we feel like failures.
