Hello, I'm Simon Corder, welcoming you to my independent travel podcast, bringing you the latest news on travelling, whether you're just dreaming of a great escape, looking forward to one or actually away, and I hope having the time of your life.

I'm at Gatwick Airport, which as you can hear, is really quite lively, lots of excited chatter chatter and that's because we've got a new route launch and these events are always full of fun. You get the spokespeople from the airlines,

the bosses of the airport and a lot of local dignitaries from Chambers of Commerce.

You furthermore also get some Prosecco, but I promise I haven't touched a drop.

So what are they celebrating?

Well, the restoration of the very long standing link from Gatwick Airport to Newkey in Cornwall. A flight of just over one hour, whether you're on the fast jets that Flyby used to use

or on the ATR 72 propeller plane that Eastern Airways the new airline on the route is using.

And it's an interesting development, partly because it's something new, partly because it is

reconnecting a part of the country which says they have very poor links with London, five

hours by rail, often more than that, by road, and partly because it's not going to Heathrow.

You might recall that Flybee before they very sadly went bust in early March 2020, just ahead of the

COVID crisis really shutting down everything.

They were doing four flights a day in and out of Heathrow.

But instead, Newkey and Eastern Airways have decided to go into Gatwick.

It's also a PSO public service obligation route.

That means that it's effectively subsidised and furthermore

there's no air passenger duty so that saves a lot of cost. Fares pretty competitive
