Last year one in 25 children at school in England was taken out of school for a holiday – resulting in a £60 fine for parents. Clearly, some parents see paying fines as worthwhile because of the enormous savings that can be made. Why are families penalised – and should the government clamp down on holiday prices?

| 0:56.7 | allowed to travel. And talking of the law, well, yes, last year, nearly 360,000 fines were |

| 1:14.4 | kids out of school for a holiday. Now, that has been, as it were, an offence for the past |
| 1:20.7 | decade. Before that, you could take up to two weeks for family holidays in special circumstances, but Michael Gove, if you remember him, |
| 1:31.0 | cracked down on parents doing that and imposed the fine. |
| 1:37.0 | Obviously, a lot of them have been going on. |
| 1:40.3 | And one can only conclude that people are seeing paying those fines as worthwhile because of |
| 1:48.6 | the enormous savings that can be made yes now as a parent i absolutely agree that it's annoying |
| 1:56.0 | but i also agree that school is a really good idea and uh you should not take kids out of school and I'll come on to a couple of possibilities a little bit later. |
