Summary

Simon Cowell — label exec, talent reality TV judge OG, “bad guy,” perma-aviator sporting, tight top-and-high pant wearer etc. and so on — fancies a challenge. He wants to create a new boy band, one that will challenge the omnipotence of K-pop, a band that will put his name back in the cultural conversation. A lot is on the line.

He scours Dublin, Liverpool, and London for plucky teen hopefuls. The initial response to his call for auditions is a little meh, but then the judges uncover some gems, albeit ones with strikingly similar haircuts.

A thousand is whittled down to under ten hopefuls who battle it out for five spaces in the as-of-yet unnamed boy band and across the six episodes viewers start to really care about the journey of these wannabe stars. Cowell is torn! He ultimately plumps for seven members (in true KPop style) and so we have Cruz Lee-Ojo, Danny Bretherton, Hendrik Christoffersen, John Fadare, Josh Olliver, Nicolas Alves, and Seán Hayden. And know they’re on our couch.

We find out a bit more about the septet: where they’re from, previous talent show accolades, what instruments they play, who loves school, who used to be a semi-pro soccer player, who almost pursued rugby full time. And of course we ask about Cowell, working with storied songwriters like Poo Bear and Savan Kotecha (Bieber, 1D, respectively), why Brits are so obsessed with breaking America, One Direction comparisons, squaring up to BTS, and so much more.

0:12.0

I'm saying.

0:13.0

A very interesting vibe here. Very interesting energy. You guys seem to really care about each other.

0:18.0

Genuine?

0:20.0

Yeah. Yeah. 100% genuine. But you don't, okay, and then two of you have been friends for a long time, right? Yeah, that is me and the guy at the end. Okay, so do you remember the moment that you actually, like, actually connected as humans, not necessarily as artists? Because it doesn't happen right out the gate. I remember the first time we actually met and we was like, my cousin introduced us and he was like, okay, we're going to go to my friend's house today and I was like, okay, like, what's his name? He's like Josh. We went and met and then my cousin and Josh are like, oh, well, this is like eight years of age and they're like, oh, do you want to go on a run? And I'm like, what? No. Like, why do they want to go on a run right now? And then we just started like kind of talking ever since. So, okay, so you meet by going out of run, right? Yeah. Yeah, pretty much. So do you know that the two of you are auditioning for this show?

1:28.8

No, so what it was is that I went to the audition and then we literally had no clue. I called up Danny. No idea. Called up Danny on the day. I was like, oh, what are you doing? What you're up to today and that? And he was like, I'm going to this audition. I was like, no way. I'm going as well. Yeah, it was literally so unplanned, like, it was crazy.

1:27.7

Yeah, but then literally so unplanned.

1:28.8

Like, it was crazy.

2:01.0

Yeah, but then we were just chilling like together. We stayed together the whole time. Did you know that you were singers? Like, did you? Oh yeah, we obviously, we've been best mates. So, like, we know we both sung and we, we went to the same singing teacher. Yeah, we went to the same music school for a while, but literally we could never do a joint singing lessons because every time we did, we just laughed the whole time and get nothing done out of it. Yeah, so we weren't allowed to do the joint lessons. We couldn't do it. We got banned from doing duo lessons. So does that change the dynamic amongst the group, like all of you? No, no, definitely not at all. Not really. I think at first it, I think it helped the chemistry, but I think now because we're so

2:05.8

close with just each other as a whole, like seven, I think the fact that me and Josh

2:11.0

have known each other since who was younger makes no difference to the group dynamic

2:14.4

and chemistry whatsoever.

2:16.2

So can we talk about, about like this has been a

2:17.7

process that's a long time coming right this is years in the making the show started filming over two

2:22.8

years ago yeah it's insane so you've obviously known each other as a unit for quite some time yeah yeah

2:28.7

yeah but do you remember the exact moment where you actually connected as human beings all of you

2:33.6

i've i've i think i've like really started in miami when we're exact moment where you actually connected as human beings, all of you?

2:34.4

I've, I think our bond was like really started in Miami when we was under so much pressure

2:39.3

and trying to like almost like you've got to almost work together to be able to

2:43.9

try and get in the band.
