Summary

Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present a visit with the one-and-only Professor Wham (Dr. C.S. Matthews). She is a journalist and has also published poetry, short stories, academic papers, a textbook on New Religious Movements and most recently a survey of paranormal reports and experiences in the Hudson Valley, "Mysterious Beauty: Living with the Paranormal in the Hudson Valley." She is also the author of the novel "Final Season — A Lovecraftian Quartet." Professor Wham has studied religion, new religious movements, occultism and paranormal experiences for over four decades. She has advanced degrees in Religious Studies and American Cultural Studies and is an ardent environmentalist. She has practiced Sufism for two decades and has studied Swedish-Finnish runes/shamanism and Mid-Hudson Algonquin Indigenous traditions from native teachers. Professor Wham lives in the beautifully haunted Mid-Hudson Valley of New York State where she teaches at local colleges and works for a prominent non-profit organization. 0:36.5	On this episode, the Paracast, we're going to start by talking about the recent passing of a close friend of ours.
0:45.3	And I think our listeners know who that is. If you haven't heard, you'll know in a couple of seconds.
0:49.7	I first encountered Chris O'Brien when he appeared on the Paracast, first talking about his investigations of the Mysterious Valley, and then a book he did called Stalking the Tricksters.
1:03.9	And he was just a terrific guest, and when our original co-host, David Biedney, left the show within a few months we had Chris on as the regular
1:12.6	co-host. He stayed until 2018 and then more or less focused more on his research.
1:20.0	They was stalking the herd and he was working on a follow-up book with David Perkins,
1:26.0	who was also no longer with us, so I don't know where
1:28.8	that's going to go. David Bietney died earlier this year. Chris had COPD and frequent breathing
1:37.2	problems. He had one of those breathalizers and other appliances that one uses for that.
1:43.2	And Sunday, this would be the 24th of November, 2004,
1:48.3	depending on when you're listening to the show.
1:50.6	Sunday, he had breathing problems,
1:53.0	and rather than wait for someone to take him
1:56.2	or call 9-11, he drove or tried to drive to the emergency room.
2:03.0	I think based on what they're saying, and I'm only guessing, but it seems to be right,
2:07.7	he blacked out on the way and got into an accident.
2:12.0	And unfortunately, Chris is no longer with us.
2:16.0	And I'll tell you, he was a great guy. Sometimes we disagreed on things,
2:20.3	but he was a really sweet guy and he did personal things to help me that I'll always appreciate.
