2021. Let's get into the mix. Here are your

Washington headlines for the day. Number one, a shutdown is averted. Number two, what

cinema is telling her colleagues about the Build Back Better Act. And number three, why pairing

the debt ceiling with the defense bill is a bad idea. So let's get into the mix.

Last night, just before 9.30, the Senate gave final approval to a stopgap spending bill

that will keep the government open until February 18th.

It was a big vote, 69 to 28, meaning 19 Republicans joined with all Democrats to vote for this bill.

The Senate rejected a Republican amendment that would have barred private sector vaccine

mandates on a party line vote.

The funding bill will head to Biden and it'll go to his desk for a signature.

The point we've been making all week, and you've heard this because we are, you've been

listening to it, is that a shutdown was never truly closed,

despite some of the breathless coverage by some.

Our reporting from the Capitol made it clear

that Mike Lee and Roger Marshall's demand

was easily solved by an amendment vote,

and that's what happened.
