Summary

This week, we want to introduce you to a new comic: Johan Miranda. He lives in Los Angeles, was raised in San Francisco. When he was three years old, he and his parents traveled to the US on a tourist visa - and they haven't left since. Johan is one of the approximately 700,000 people covered under the US Government's DACA policy (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). A DREAMer. And as immigration rhetoric has ramped up, Johan's status in this country has grown even more uncertain. He's got a new one man show to talk just about that - it's called "Why Johan Miranda Should Be Deported" and it's debuting in Los Angeles on July 27. Then, after that: a conversation with Debra Granik. In 2010 she wrote and directed "Winter's Bone," the acclaimed drama that launched Jennifer Lawrence's career and was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Now, the long awaited follow-up is in theaters. It's called "Leave No Trace" and it's been met with similar acclaim. She and Jesse talk about the new film, about the pitfalls of calling an artist a "genius" and her first ever paid movie gig: shooting weddings! Finally: a tribute to Joe Pera. A comedian who will help you buy a tree. Or go to sleep. Or learn about iron.

into the United States as kids without papers, dreamers, they call themselves. Dacca allows

them to stay and work and go to school legally. And if you're listening to NPR, you probably

0:39.4

don't need me to tell you this, but today, the residency status of the folks covered by

Dacca is uncertain. And people are worried about that. So anyway, there's this comedian named

Johann Miranda. He came here when he was three years old with his parents from Peru.

He signed up for Dacca and some of his friends signed up for Dacca too. And today, honestly,

1:02.5

he's not feeling that great about it. And I was the one that was like, no, we should trust

1:08.0

the government. We should, it'll be fine. And then, you know, so I was, I was the dummy

1:14.0

in hindsight for trusting the government. Yeah, it's Bullseye.

Coming up, Johann Miranda, a dreamer, a stand up comic, and a very chill dude. Looking

1:32.7

back and hindsight, it is, you know, weird to think about like, how much of my personality

1:37.0

is just me, like coping with the parameters I'm set with, you know, because I am kind of

1:44.0

like a chill dude. Like, I don't, you know, easy going, God, but how much of that is just

1:49.1

me being like, don't deport me. Then Deborah Granick. She's the writer and director of

1:55.8

Wintersbone, the Academy Award-nominated drama from 2010. She's just come out with a long

2:01.0

awaited follow-up to the movie called Leave No Trace. Both are very serious, compassionate

films about family, poverty, and trauma. But how should you get her start? Making wedding
