Summary

The first presidential debate is around the corner. Ravi takes stock of the ways the Biden and Trump teams have approached debate preparation, explains how both camps have worked to shape the narrative leading up to the debate, and whether the candidates’ performance could impact the state of the election. He then turns to external forces in the election and explores a new piece from Julia Ioffe in Puck, which details Russia’s incompetent and sloppy efforts to influence this election cycle. Then, Reason producer Justin Zuckerman joins to share his recent reporting on the high cost of daycare in Washington, D.C., and the impact of overregulation on various industries. Ravi and Justin tackle the counterproductive regulations that have contributed to Washington’s childcare crisis, including minimum wage requirements, credentialing qualifications, staff-to-student ratios, and the impact of universal pre-K. Finally, Ravi interviews Liz Crampton, state policy reporter at Politico, about the unprecedented spending in state legislative races and how local elections could influence upper ballot races. They also discuss the repercussions of the recent primary elections in Texas, where Governor Abbott took revenge against his fellow Republican colleagues after they opposed his school voucher legislation. Welcome to the West Debata Show for Political Ecclectics. I'm Ravi Gupta. And shortly we're going to hear from two separate reporters on two different issues. We're going to talk about what's happening all around the states around the country, including state legislation, races, which just aren't getting a lot of coverage, but are going to be really important. And then we're going to talk about child care and some really bad policy on child care and what it tells us about our politics around some of these really important issues.

0:25.7

But as we do now, let's talk about some of the more timely issues happening here.

0:31.8

And let's start with these debates.

0:33.1

So right now, Trump and Biden are ostensibly preparing for the debates on June 27th. These are the

0:40.0

earliest debates we have ever had. This one is going to be moderated by CNN, anchors, Jake

0:44.8

Tapper, and Dana Bash. It'll run approximately 90 minutes with two commercial breaks. And this will be

0:50.3

the first of two scheduled debates between the candidates. Second will happen maybe on

0:55.0

September 10th. The structure of this one will be a little different, you know, outside of just the

0:59.1

timing. Microphones will be muted throughout the debate except for when the candidates speak so that

1:04.4

it'll be harder to interrupt. And they will appear without a live audience and the lecterns will be determined by a coin flip.

1:14.4

We're going to do more on this, but these debates are going to be really important because they're going to frame the summer, right?

1:20.1

Who's going to be in damage control coming out of the debates?

1:22.8

Who's going to be exceeding expectations?

1:25.2

And expectations are the name of the game here. Expectations are

1:28.9

everything. For those of you who are old enough to remember, one of the most memorable debates we've

1:33.9

ever had are the debates between George W. Bush and Al Gore. That was a nail-biter of a race,

1:39.2

and those debates, in my opinion, really mattered. Going into those debates, the Gore team totally

1:45.7

mishandled expectations. The sort of message out there, both from Gore and his supporters,

1:50.7

was that George W. Bush was dumb, that Al Gore was like a seasoned debater, debate champion,

1:56.3

and strategists for George W. Bush, like Karl Rove, were feeding into that perception being like,

2:03.1

hey, we'll be lucky to even hang with this guy who's a master at the craft of debating.

2:08.8

And what wound up happening was, you know, objectively, who knows, like if you were just scoring
