Bull Durham, right? Yes, probably the 30th time, at least, that I've seen Bull Durham. But this time

around, I was watching it and something dawned on me for the first time,

which is that the character that Susan Sarandon plays,

whether consciously or unconsciously, was my sexual role model.

And I had been living in her footsteps essentially since I was a teenager when I first saw the movie.

And I grew up in a house that sex was always portrayed as an obligation, particularly for women.

It's something that my mother said you had to do to please the man, but that you never enjoyed it.

And I still remember the first time that I watched Bull Durham and realizing that it could be something different,

that there was the possibility of sex as a pleasant experience for women

and one that we could drive and that we ourselves could initiate

and be powerful in.
