Hey, it's Anna. I was in a Lyft a few weeks ago on the way to the airport, and I asked my driver what he thought about a new California law that's intended to force companies like Uber and Lyft to make their drivers employees instead of contractors.

My driver told me that he doesn't like the law because he likes the flexibility of being a contractor.

He just wishes Lyft would pay him more so he could spend less time on the road

and more time with his wife and four kids.

Our conversation made me think about the episode we did about Bay Area Uber drivers back in 2017.

Producer Katie Bishop and I got in the car and asked our drivers why they started driving.

And we heard all kinds of stories about immigration, the cost of housing, student debt, and still trying to recover from the financial crisis.
