Summary

This week, we are very excited to introduce you all to one of our favorite podcasts: Heavyweight, hosted by Jonathan Goldstein. First, Jonathan chats with Anna about the art of asking difficult questions, why he loves awkward phone calls, and the emotional power of deadlines. Then, we're playing the first episode of Heavyweight’s new season. In it, Jonathan finds out his childhood best friend is dying, and though they haven't spoken in years, Jonathan and Lenny begin nightly phone calls.

New episodes of Heavyweight are available every Thursday through the end of the year — listen wherever you get your podcasts.

Thank you.

Jonathan Goldstein has long been one of my heroes in audio from This American Life, Wiretap,

0:48.9

and since 2016 with heavyweight. If you don't know the show, the idea is that Jonathan helps his guest,

0:55.7

or sometimes himself, do the necessary reporting to track down the answer to some question

1:01.8

or lay down some burden or regret, usually from years ago, something that's been a heavy

1:09.3

weight. The episodes can be quite serious or not.

1:13.5

There's a lot of Jonathan calling strangers out of the blue

1:16.2

to ask them a question about something

1:17.7

that you never expect to get a call from a journalist about.

1:21.5

And you never know where an episode is going to take you.

1:25.3

But they all start the same way,

1:31.3

with Jonathan making a random phone call to his childhood friend, Jackie.
