Back in March, we brought you an interview about heroin and overcoming addiction.

But as we reported that story, it took an unexpected turn, and we promised you an update.

In the episode, I talked with two people that we called Mike and Suzanne.

Those aren't their real names.

They'd been together since they were teenagers and got married eight years ago.

Mike and Suzanne were both addicted to heroin for five years. During that time,

they also had three kids. And then after several attempts at getting clean, they stopped using

with the help of methadone. When we recorded the interview, they'd been clean for almost a decade.

Do you ever get urges now?

Yeah, maybe occasionally, but not with any frequency.

I don't. I don't look back at that time with fondness at all.

Has it been harder to rebuild than you thought it was going to be?

Yes.

After I interviewed Mike and Suzanne, we found out about pending criminal charges against Mike.

They weren't drug charges, but for sexual abuse of a minor.

In May, Mike pled guilty to one charge that he sent sexual texts to a preteen girl.

We reached out to Suzanne to ask about what's happened since we spoke earlier this year.

He was initially facing four charges, and three of them were dropped.

And now he's facing a maximum of 18 months in county jail.

But they did it because the victim had been suicidal and they were trying to give him a generous enough plea deal
