Hayden and I said goodnight to Chubby and went into the sun porch where we sleep.

This was about 1245.

We talked about an hour of home troubles and several other things.

We were in a cheerful mood and laughing. I soon went to

sleep as I was dog tired because I'd been flying for 12 hours during the day. I was awakened by a report

and called, What's That? The room was in darkness and Hayden did not answer. I looked toward him and he was making a funny noise. I got out of bed and

looked closer and saw there was something wrong with him. I shook him and he did not make any

statement so I turned on the light. His face was covered with blood and he was lying on his side.

I ran to Chubby's door and shouted, Get up!

Mrs. Keith Miller said,

I heard Bill, Captain Lancaster,

knocking on my door and hollering, get up.

I jumped out of the bed to see what was the matter.

Bill was shouting, Hayden has shot himself.

I did not know what to do, so ran to Hayden and saw that he was all covered with blood.

I thought it was a hemorrhage as I could not see any gun. I yelled to Bill to get a doctor, then I got a sponge and started to wash the blood off Hayden.

Meanwhile, Bill was phoning for a doctor. Then I looked and saw the barrel of a gun

sticking out from under his leg. I pulled it out about an inch from the barrel. Bill was still phoning,

and I ran downstairs to see if the doctor had gotten there. The doctor was not in sight,

so I phoned Dr. Dieter. The ambulance arrived, and I told him we had a doctor on the way over.

Dr. Dieter didn't get there, so I phoned Mr. Houston, the lawyer, to come over and bring a doctor.
