Medical professionals have used many phrases to describe someone who enjoys

inflicting pain upon other human beings.

The current terminology refers to the recurrent and intense sexual arousal

from the physical or psychological suffering of another person, as manifested by fantasies,

urges or behaviors.

It is classified as one of the so-named parapherelians, called an algo-lagnic disorder.

The formal diagnosis of sexual sadism disorder would apply if the individual has acted on these urges with a non-consenting person,

or if the urge calls significant distress to the victim.

The term sadism derives from the French author Donatier Alphonse Francois Machid Sad.

He lived a scandalous, libertine existence, and repeatedly procured young prostitutes,

as well as employees of both sexes, in his castle in La Cost.

He was also accused of blasphemy, a serious offense at the time.

His behavior also included an affair with his wife's sister, Anne Cospéa, who had come to live at his castle.
