0:15.8	Before we embark on our journey again, I want to take a moment to reflect on the origins of this holiday.
0:24.2	To truly understand the history of Mother's Day, we must go back thousands of years to
0:29.9	the ancient world.
0:32.3	The earliest known celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the annual spring festival
0:38.8	in ancient Greece, honoring Rhea, the mother of gods. But it wasn't just the Greeks,
0:47.5	the Romans also had a festival called matronalia, where husbands and children would shower their wives and mothers with gifts
0:55.8	and flowers. This tradition carried on for centuries, in various forms, eventually influencing
1:04.0	a Christian holiday known as Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday was celebrated in Europe, particularly in the United Kingdom, on the
1:15.3	Fourth Sunday of Lent.
1:17.4	This was a time when people would return to their mother church, the church where they were
1:22.4	baptized and grew up attending.
1:25.9	Families would reunite, and children would often bring gifts,
1:30.1	such as flowers or small tokens, for their mothers. But what about modern Mother's Day? For that,
1:38.5	we must turn to the early 20th century, and the efforts of a woman named Anna Jarvis.
1:45.7	Anna Jarvis was the daughter of Anne Reeves Jarvis, a social activist and community organizer,
1:53.2	who worked hard to improve the lives of women and families.
1:58.2	After her mother's death, in 1905, Anna sought to create a day that would honor the
2:04.8	sacrifices mothers made for their children. In 1908, Anna held the first Mother's Day celebration
2:12.7	at a Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia.
2:23.3	By 1912, she had successfully established the Mother's Day International Association and began campaigning to have Mother's Day recognized as an official holiday.
