Summary

This week's Deadpod features a wonderful recording of the band's performance in Paris France on September 20, 1974. This is a splendid recording, and a very interesting performance. The band opens with a spirited 'Cumberland Blues' followed by a nice 'Jack Straw'. The first-set 'Scarlet Begonias' features some very nice Phil leads. Bobby's vocals are top-notch on the 'Black Throated Wind' that follows. The 'Friend of the Devil' that is performed afterwards, is one of the last 'fast' versions the band played. We get to hear a full 'Weather Report Suite' highlighted by some nice keyboard work by Keith. Jerry follows with a soulful 'Stella Blue'. The 'Around and Around that closes the set has a unique feel to it..

Hello and welcome to the dead pod for the week of September the 10th 2021. This is a professor,

0:04.3

I'm so glad he could pick us up this week. This week we're going to go back to one of my favorite

0:09.0

years, 1974, and listen to a show from the fall tour of Europe that took place in that month. This

0:17.4

happened on September 20th, 1974, and you'll have to excuse my French at the Pelle des Sports

0:24.4

in Paris, France. Really nice sounding tape and an interesting arrangement. Of course they were

0:30.8

solo drummer at this time, so that's it's kind of interesting to hear Billy throughout this.

0:35.8

They start out with a really nice coming on blues. Jack Straw follows, it must have been the roses,

0:40.6

beat it on down the line. A really sweet scarlet begonious, and that's followed by a black-throated

0:47.3

wind, and I think you should listen to the crescendo on this. It's really fine. Bobby does a great

0:52.6

job with this, the vocals on this one. Friend of the devil follows, it's one of the last fast versions,

0:57.6

El Paso, Ro Jimmy, always a favorite of mine, and then a great weather report suite, including the

1:03.2

prelude part one, and let it grow. That's followed by a sad and sweet Stella Blue, always a favorite,

1:11.5

and they close the set with an interesting around and around. So an interesting first set, I think

1:16.6

you'll enjoy it. I certainly think the quality is quite good and enjoyed listening to the tape,

1:22.1

so I hope you do too. Thanks so much for picking us up this week. I hope you have a great weekend

1:26.6

and a great week, and thanks for your support of the DeadPod. I couldn't do it without you,
