Summary

A great show from a great run is showcased in this week's Deadpod. This is from September 26, 1972 at the Stanley Theater in Jersey City, New Jersey. The first show of a three night run, this features some great guitar work by Garcia throughout, even here in the first set. A fine 'Cold Rain and Snow' might be overlooked by the early 'He's Gone', but there is so much great music here. I love the 'Bird Song' and the 'Sugaree'. The band is loose throughout and I'm certain you'll enjoy this classic performance.

Thanks to Steve for this suggestion and a Happy Birthday to him!

It starts out with Promised Land, then a great cold rain and snow, me and my uncle. He's gone follows next in a rather strange location for it.

If you listen closely, you'll hear that Bobby starts out by playing the chords to Birdsong, but then he quickly adjusts and gets back into he's gone.

Mexicaly Blues follows a nice deal, Cumberland Blues always a great rocker, black-throated wind, a wonderful bird song that does make its appearance.

Big River, Fowl's, Sugary, Round and Round and they close set one with Casey Jones.

1:09.0

He's long first set and lots of standards. Apparently the Stanley Theater there on Jersey City was rocking that night and the balcony was shaken.

1:18.0

There was a big sign hanging up the set, Get Well Pig Pen, of course he wasn't with the band by that point.
