Summary

This week's Deadpod has been a often requested show for some time.. I think I hesitated in putting it on the Deadpod because it was such a well-known show, and it had been broadcast back in the day on TV. Still its probably one of the finest shows of 1991, and since its anniversary was coming up, I decided it would be a great time to break it out here on the Deadpod.

This show occurred back on June 17th, 1991 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford NJ. They blow out of the gate with a spot on Eyes of the World.. I really loved seeing this on TV as you could tell how much Jerry and Bruce were enjoying the interplay on this song, and you can clearly hear it in their playing. This is only the first first-set Eyes of the World since 1975... they follow with a very good Walkin' Blues, then a very good Brown-Eyed Women, with a fine Hornsby lead in it.. what follows is quite unusual, as Jerry breaks out the Dark Star motif, which the band picks up on, and while they don't actually play Dark Star (until set 2) the thematic is present throughout the night, and adds another element of excitement to the already interesting playing.. Weir follows with a Masterpiece, then we get a fun Loose Lucy.. Cassidy and a rockin' Might As Well close out set 1.. We'll listen to set 2 next week..

0:00.0	Hello and welcome the Dead Pod for the week of June the 14th 2013. This is a professor. I'm so glad you could pick us up this week.
0:06.4	This week I'm going to bring a show that's long been on my most requested shows.
0:10.8	I guess everybody likes a lot of variety in the dead pod and I try to satisfy that
0:15.7	craving but this week's show set appeared on a TV show called In Concert I
0:20.6	think it was broadcast on ABC at the time. I remember what a fine performance it was. It was like Jerry. It was really
0:28.6	Amping it up for this particular performance and it's a great show comes to us from Giant Stadium
0:34.0	June the 17th 1991. We'll hear the first set this week and the second set next
0:39.2	week. It's a real fine performance. It starts out with an eyes of the world. It's the first time they, I think it's
0:46.2	the first time they ever open with eyes of the world and it's the first time since 75 that they
0:50.9	played it in the first set. This is a fine performance. Jerry, of course, is playing off of Hornsby at this time, and they have some great interplay, and it's just a fine version of that song. It then goes into Walken Blues which is quite well played.
1:04.0	Then a wonderful brown-eyed women. Hornsby's got a great solo in here.
1:08.0	And then they go into a very unusual Dark Star Tease as it were Jerry brings in the opening lines and the band
1:15.8	follows along. This the Dark Star kind of motif flows throughout this first set
1:22.4	and throughout the show.
1:23.4	It makes its reappearance at several places in the first set.
1:27.6	But the band certainly had the song on their mind and it certainly got the crowd thinking about whoa first
1:34.4	set Dark Star however they go into when I paint my masterpiece and then a fine
1:38.8	version of Loose Lucy what follows is Cassidy into a great might as well to close set one.
