Summary

This week on the Deadpod we feature a Kentucky Derby Day performance by the band back in 1991. This was at Cal Expo, in Sacramento California on May 4, 1991.

The band starts out hard and tight with a roaring 'Hell In a Bucket'. They are without Hornsby here, and in some ways sound tighter and more together (although I'm well aware that opinions differ on how Vince sounds here). The 'Sugaree' that follows is very good, with Garcia really ramping it up in the solo.

I think that the version of 'The Race Is On' here is a real winner. 'Row Jimmy' is always fun to hear and they also feature 'New Speedway Boogie' which they broke out during the Spring tour that year.

0:05.7	This week I'm going to bring you a fine first set from the band's performance at the Catalan Explo Amp Theater in Sacramento, California, May 4th, 1991.
0:15.8	It was a Saturday. It was Kentucky Derby Day. Just like Kentucky Derby Day is coming up tomorrow.
0:22.8	They started out with a great hell in the bucket, a real snarling vertebrae. That's very nice.
0:27.8	Sugary follows very much a powerhouse with Garcia doing an excellent solo. I think you'll enjoy that one quite a bit.
0:35.8	New Minglewood follows loser. Then a four mentioned the race is on. We couldn't let a Derby Day go by without one if we could avoid it.
0:43.8	Road Jimmy follows when I picked my masterpiece. New Speedway Boogie, a song they had recently brought out.
0:50.8	Jerry flubs a few of the lyrics but it's still nice to hear that tune and they close with an interesting music never stopped. Always a good set closer.
