Summary

After five months of 'retirement' the Grateful Dead returned to the stage at this benefit concert in San Francisco on March 23, 1975. While they were billed as 'Jerry Garcia and Friends' and Ned Lagin and Merl Saunders were sitting in, this performance was seen by most as confirming the rumors that the Grateful Dead's retirement was ending.

I will leave it to you to imagine what it must have been like to have been in the audience and heard this wonderful piece of psychedelic music for the first time. Completely instrumental they blew the crowd away with the musicianship displayed here.

When they finished, they broke out a spectacular 'Johnny B Goode' for good measure.

Hello and welcome to DeadPod for the week of March 31st, 2023. This professor I'm so glad

0:05.1

could pick us up this week. This week as we bid a due to the month of March, I was reminded of

0:11.6

the anniversary of a quite unique and special show and grateful that hit me. Took place back on

0:17.8

March 23rd, 1975 at Keesar Stadium. It was a benefit for San Francisco students need athletes,

0:28.0

athletics, culture and kick snack. Lots of people were on the bell including Bob Dylan,

0:33.8

Neil Young, a whole bunch of people joined by us, so on Dooby Brothers, Jefferson Starship.

0:42.6

The Dead shows this as the first time to make their appearance on stage in five months. Of course,

0:47.9

they had the retirement shows at Winterland and this was the first time that they played since

0:55.6

five months later after that. They chose to play not a medley of their hits or a few songs

1:04.4

that everybody knew, but in fact they broke out something that no one had heard before,

1:09.0

and in fact something that hadn't been, wasn't quite finished yet, and that is Bluth Ferala.

1:16.9

Rather short, Bluth Ferala segment is completely lyric-free. However, it just must have

1:23.9

blown people's minds because they'd never heard it, and if you listen at the end of it for the

1:28.1

reaction from the crowd, it's amazing. They come back and do a smoking hot version of Johnny Me Good

1:35.2

just to show that they can still rock. After that following that, I've included a little

1:42.0

interview that was done with Jerry Garcia on that day, but I put it at the end rather than at the

1:46.4

beginning. If you don't want to hear it, I can pause it or skip through it. I always kind of

1:52.4

enjoy these Garcia interviews, but this is a fairly short set. It's only about 45 minutes, but

1:58.0

unique in history, and what a set, what a fabulous piece of musical accomplishment this is.

2:08.0

So my words won't do it just to sound like let you listen and decide for yourself. I hope you

2:13.8

enjoy it. Thanks for picking this up. As always, I couldn't do it without your support. I do

2:17.8

appreciate it. Hope you're well. See you back here next week. This is a professor you're listening to,
