Summary

Today we head back to February 1982 and the Pauley Pavilion at UCLA for a fine‑sounding tape of a very tasty Grateful Dead set.

They come out of the gate with a wonderful Shakedown; Brent and Phil are all over this one, and it makes for a perfect opener.

A gritty New Minglewood Blues follows, with Bobby leaning into the slide work here and again later on Little Red Rooster.

Jerry is in strong voice on Friend of the Devil and a spacious Bird Song, and the set wraps up in unusual fashion with Bertha sliding straight into Man Smart (Woman Smarter) as a first‑set closer.

This week, I decided to bring you a really nice-sounding recording of the band's performance out at UCLA at the Pauley Pavilion on February 21st, 1982.

0:18.4

It was a Sunday night show.

0:20.4

And we'll hear the first set this week, second set

0:22.6

next week. Starts out with a fine shakedown street. I think that Phil and Brent in particular

0:27.9

are in fine form here. Jerry has, Jerry's in good voice as well throughout. So I really enjoy the

0:33.6

shakedown opener. That goes into a new minglewood blues. Bobby is quite prevalent here.

0:39.3

He's going on a slide guitar, does quite some soloing there, and you'll hear that as well in

0:45.0

a little red rooster, which comes up a little bit later. Friend of the Devil goes into me and my

0:49.2

uncle into Big River. A nice bird song follows. There's a short audience splice in there, but it's nothing to

0:56.4

detract too much. Then the aforementioned Little Red Rooster. They close the set with an unusual

1:01.8

combination, Bertha into man, smart, woman smarter. That I haven't looked, but it may be the only

1:07.5

time that combo happened. It's certainly unusual. Anyway, hope you enjoy it.
